Short Note on Graphite

File:GraphiteUSGOV.jpg
Graphite (Source: Wikipedia)
  • Reactive form of Carbon.
  • Dark,opaque and light material.
  • Though non-metallic,graphite posses metallic lustre
  • Density =2.22 g cm^-3.
  • Graphite is composed of flat two-dimensional sheets of carbon
  • Each sheet is a hexagonal net of C-atoms,and may regard as a fused system of benzene rings.
  • Layers held together by relatively weak Wan Der Waals forces
  • In graphite,C atom is sp2 hybridised and non bonded pz orbitals overlap to give completely delocalized system of molecular orbits.Due to excitation   of these electrons, graphite appears black.
  • Good conductor of heat and electricity because of the presence of free electrons on each carbon atom.
  • It cleaves easily between the layers, which account for the remarkable softness of the crystals.
  • Thermodynamically more stable than diamond.
  • Used as a lubricant.
  • It is used for making electrodes in steel making and metal foundries, for crucibles,in pencils and break linings
  • Used as a moderator in  the cores of gas cooled nuclear reactors, where it slows down neutrons.
  • Present as diamagnetic, but intercalation compunds are paramagnetic.
